Wednesday at 7:00 PM
WOW! Worship on Wednesdays
Our popular Wednesday Night Service is very informal and held in our sanctuary at 7:00 PM The sermons will be on the same topic as the message from the previous Sunday, but in a more relaxed manner. After each message there is a time of dialog, discussion or Q&A. If you are away for the weekend or on vacation, you can catch up on what you missed. If something intriguing, troubling or confusing is stated, you can ask questions to help clarify the key points of the message. Think of it as "Sunday Lite." Special music is often provided by members of the congregation or guests.
Ash Wednesday & WOW
There will be two opportunities to receive ashes on Wednesday, February 22nd. We will hold an hour-long Prayer Vigil from 2 -3 PM in the sanctuary, and Rev. Jones will be there with ashes to place on the forehead or hands of any who desire it. Then at our normal 7:00 PM WOW service we will include a time for the imposition of ashes. Ash Wednesday is the formal beginning of Lent, a time of reflection, self-evaluation from a spiritual perspective, repentance and change. Join us at one of these opportunities for prayer.
Music is Important to Us
We are blessed with really great music at La Plata UMC. It all begins with our excellent organist, Linda Dent Mitchell who is very accomplished and brings her bright personality and energy to our music program. She accompanies our adult Chancel Choir of 25 plus voices, which is directed by Pat Day; and Linda directs our Cherub Choir of between 20 and 30 children from Kindergarten through 5th grade.

...sings each week at the 11:00 service from September through May. Pat Day, the Choir Director, does a great job of selecting a mix of traditional, modern and contemporary choral pieces. They also prepare and sing two cantatas per year, at Christmas an at Easter. We are very proud of our choir and it has a mix of older and younger choir members in all four voice parts. Many of our choir members provide solo music at our 8:30 AM service, and throughout the summer at our single 10:00 service. They are always looking for new voices to join the fun and fellowship. They rehearse on Wednesday evenings from 7:30 to 8:30 in the Choir Room downstairs. |
...also sings from the fall till Mother's Day. They typically sing on the second Sunday of the month from October to May. They occasionally learn to use percussion instruments and they have learned sign language for some songs, and foreign languages for other songs. Linda Dent Mitchell, along with her co-directors Sherri McConnell and Judi Gordon, provide a time of enthusiasm, fun and learning. She can really get those kids to sing well. They rehearse in the Youth Room downstairs from 7:00 to 7:45 PM on Wednesdays. We are hoping to revive our Youth Choir again soon, as we are rebuilding our youth fellowship ministries. If you'd like to lead our Youth Choir, we are happy to talk to you about this. |
OUR NEW HAND BELL CHOIR is formed and in rehearsals. We have a fantastic core group of ringers but are looking for a few more interested people. We'll take experienced and inexperienced people - we can teach you! If you would be interested in playing, please contact Cheryl Reckeweg (240-249-6342 or cheryl.reckeweg@navy.mil) and let her know. Rehearsals are on Thursday evenings from 6 -7 PM in the Sanctuary. |

Making Worship More Colorful
| "Mary Did You Know" January 8, 2012 Angel Wing Liturgical Dance Ministry |
While liturgical dance is an old medium of expression in the church, for us, having a liturgical dance troupe is a relatively new phenomenon. We are blessed with some formerly professional dancers, some teens who have taken dance, and others who just love to express their joy in faith through movement. Angel Wings performs for us about three to four times a year, and they rehearse on Sunday afternoons at 12:30, right after worship in the sanctuary. If you are interested in joining the group, please see Betty Anne Risley |
